Rating Process

Several steps may be taken to determine a fair rating after a PHRF application is submitted. The following chart highlights the major steps. For more detail, see the PHRF-GB Bylaws and Operating Policies.

1. Member submits yacht for rating Check dimensions, options. Look for PHRF-GB sistership Maximize current knowledge of the applicant.
Assume 12 knots of wind, mixture of triangle and W/L courses.
Assign same BASE RATING as sistership, or go on to Step 2.
2. No sistership in PHRF-GB Look at similar PHRF regions for sisterships: Long Island Sound (YRALIS),
Lake Erie,

Lake Michigan
Experience shows their conditions and base ratings similar to PHRF-GB. Make sure dimensions match (phone call).
Check benchmark base ratings to see how region with a sistership compares to PHRF-GB (e.g., J-35, J29, Tartan 10, J-24)
Assign base rating or go on to Step 3.
3. Nothing similar in PHRF preferred regions Review IMS data Check benchmark base ratings to see how IMS compares to PHRF-GB (e.g., J-35, J29, Tartan 10, J-24).
National suggest trying PHRF1998 = IMSGP1997-555 to get within +/- 10 sec./mile.
Assign base rating or go on to Step 4.
4. No IMS data Look at PHRF ratings around the country Check benchmark base ratings to see how region with a sistership compares to PHRF-GB (e.g., J-35, J29, Tartan 10, J-24)
Assign base rating or go on to Step 5.
5. No sisterships in PHRF nationally Look for near sisterships. Consider Provisional Rating good for specified number of races.
Assign base rating or go on to Step 6.
6. Still no candidates Compare dimensions and indices to yachts already rated by PHRF-GB. Assign Provisional Rating good for specified number of races.
Assign base rating and go on to Step 7.
7. Apply penalties or credits to BASE RATING to develop PHRF-GB rating. Check for oversize/undersize rigging, etc. as noted in factors to consider. See penalty/credit guidelines.

8. Develop Distance and Non-Spinnaker Factors Use estimators from database Compare to similar yachts for fairness.
